National Parks and Reserves in Kenya

The Kenya Wildlife Service is charged with the management and maintenance of the country’s national parks. The body also carries out a variety of duties including; providing security for park visitors and wildlife, performing wildlife conservation activities including the running of sanctuaries.

The KWS’s headquarters are in Nairobi City at the main entrance of the Nairobi National Park.

Some of the country’s parks are however under the jurisdiction of local councils and are used as a source of revenue.

Kenyan Parks are gazetted as such under law and human settlement and encroachment is prohibited. Pastoral communities bordering these parks are however allowed to take their livestock into the parks for grazing.

Most of these parks are open for personal visits, though you should arrange for your own transport. Local tour operators provide transport for visitors to game parks. A fee is charged on entry.

Some of the major parks have well developed infrastructure which includes; all weather roads and easy to follow signs.

Accommodations is available in the form of lodges and tented camps which are a popular choice.
