Common foods in Kenya are more filling and less tantalizing. Ugali which is the country’s staple food is a pasty mixture of maize flour and water (akin to thickened porridge). Ugali is not eaten alone and is usually had with vegetables or stew.
The cost of meals is very low; you can have a decent dish at some of the low-cost restaurants for under $1.50 which is equivalent to about Ksh 105.00.
There are much fancier restaurants many in Nairobi serving specializing in a variety of international cuisine including; Japanese, Chinese, Mexican and American. There is also a major Indian influence in the local restaurant scene, with a number of joints to choose from.
Eating at such restaurants normally costs on average below Ksh 2,000 for a meal. Prior booking may be required before dining and your local tour guide may assist you with this.
The Kenyan coast is on its own level in terms of culinary delicacies. The Coast’s centuries old link with the Indian Ocean trade has left its influence on local cuisine. Here you can expect to be treated to dishes cooked with spices and sometimes coconut.
