Telephone services in Kenya are the domain of the Telkom Corporation. There are a number of telecommunication options available for the tourist visiting Kenya. The telephone services here are affordable and reliable and local calls are fairly cheap.
There are phone booths red in color for local calls. These take coin denominations of up to ksh 10. The yellow phone booths known as cardphones can be used to make international calls using a pre-paid phone card that can be purchased at a post office or news agency.
Mobile communication is cheap and can be a convenience if you are staying in the country for a long period. Network coverage may in some remote locations be very poor.
You can carry your own phone though security is an issue especially in Nairobi where mobile phone theft rates are high.
There are cheap mobile phones that are sold for about ksh 3,000. Prepaid credit is the popular option and top-up cards can be purchased from as little as ksh 100.
There are a number of private telephone and fax bureaus in the major towns where you can also make international phone calls, send and receive faxes.
